Building a global network through collaboration and sustainability

Yili has been confirmed as the dairy partner for the G20 Indonesia Summit, an event which will see the dairy producer showcase its Joyday ice cream brand to participants from around the world.

Pan Gang, Chairman and President of Yili Group, says: Global cooperation is essential for development. In partnership with the G20 Summit, Yili Group will continue to provide healthy products to global consumers, advocate for a healthy lifestyle, promote green and sustainable development, and contribute to global economic growth.”

Yu Miao, President Director of PT Yili Indonesia Dairy, says the G20 offers “an excellent opportunity for global consumers to get to know Joyday’s nutritious, healthy and high-quality ice creams and enjoy its unique flavors”.

He adds: “As the premier forum for international economic cooperation and global economic governance, the G20 plays an important role in the field of global development. Through its partnership with G20, Yili Group will take a step further in advocating healthy lifestyles to global customers, striving to build a global health ecosystem and realize the dream of “World Integrally Sharing Health.”

It will be Yili’s second dairy partnership with the G20 Summit, after the Hangzhou Summit in 2016. The latest collaboration heralds a new agreement with the G20 Committee to jointly support coral reef conservation in the Komodo National Park of Indonesia, which includes reef restoration and beaches and underwater cleaning. The initiative aims to help conserve global biodiversity while providing long-term economic, social and environmental benefits to the region.

Currently, Yili owns 74 production bases and 15 global innovation and R&D centers and has established partnerships with more than 2,000 enterprises in 39 countries and regions. These alliances and collaborations are delivering momentum behind the company’s long-term development. Joyday, Cremo, AMBPOMIAL, Youngfun, Westgold, Kabrita are among other Yili brands available in over 60 countries and regions around the world.

Locally sourced

Produced at the Yili Indonesia Dairy Production Base, which opened in December 2021, Joyday ice cream debuted in 2018 and has since been rolled out to over 300 cities in Indonesian and Southeast Asian markets.

With Indonesia a major producer of tropical fruits such as coconuts and durians, Yili is well positioned to benefit from the supply of local produce and has established cooperative relationships with over 90 local suppliers for ingredients including milk powder, sugar, oil, cocoa products and packaging paper, accounting for 65% of total raw and auxiliary materials.

Texture and flavor are important qualities in the Indonesian ice cream industry, with consumers favoring punchier flavors of fresh fruit and chocolate.

“With the growing health awareness of local consumers, the demand for dairy products is increasing in the Indonesian market. Indonesian consumers are also giving more priority to nutritional content and high-quality raw materials, as well as environmentally friendly packaging,” Yu adds.

Value sharing and collaboration

Over 95% of employees at Yili Indonesia Dairy Production Base are locally recruited and the expansion of the site is expected to create an additional 5,000 employment opportunities. After its second phase is completed, the site will become the country’s largest ice cream factory, capable of producing four million ice cream products per day, thanks to its digital manufacturing system and cutting-edge technology.

In June 2022, Yili won a Special Achievement Award in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at the Bisnis Indonesia Corporate Social Responsibility Awards (BISRA) and, as part of the country’s National Economic Recovery Program, has rolled out subsidy schemes to help local distributors continue to operate during the pandemic.

“Through a global mindset and local operations, Yili takes the initiative to get involved in local communities, discovers and trains local talent, promotes local economic growth and prosperity, and shares its development gains with partners,” says Yu.

‘World Integrally Sharing Health’

In line with company’s sustainable development goals, Yili has launched a ‘World Integrally Sharing Healthy’ (WISH) system, which is divided into four action areas and forms part of the United Nation 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • Win-Win Results across the Industrial Chain (W: Win-Win)
  • Quality and Innovation (I: Innovation)
  • Social Welfare (S: Social)
  • Nutrition and Health (H: Health)

Yu says: “Echoing the G20’s spirit of mutual development, Yili has, throughout its own process of development, always helped its partners achieve better growth and win-win outcomes, making it an excellent fit with the G20 cooperative spirit.”

Sustainable development

Since its launch, Yili Indonesia Dairy has attached great importance to sustainable development, in line with the company’s ‘green industrial chain’ ethos. Having formulated its own Net-Zero Carbon Future Plan and issued the Roadmap to a Net-Zero Carbon Future, Yili has launched a number of net-zero carbon factories. The company has also conducted field study trips to palm tree plantations and palm oil refineries to countries in Southeast Asia including Malaysia and Indonesia, visiting Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified partners.

“Through tangible actions that will benefit future generations, Yili is determined to boost the market share of sustainable palm oil and promote the maintenance, preservation and improvement of the ecosystem,” explains Yu.

Other sustainable initiatives at the production base include a wastewater treatment system with a daily treatment capacity of 2,800 tons, to produce water for irrigating plants in the factory, as well as high-efficiency, energy-saving motors and natural gas boilers which cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 8,000 tons per year.

Dr. Edi Prio Pambudi, Indonesia’s G20 Sherpa and Deputy Minister of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, said that Yili’s development concepts were “highly consistent with the G20’s agendas”, adding: “As a responsible global enterprise, Yili’s efforts in improving public health, promoting digital transformation and sustainable development have been well recognized.”
