Coca-Cola Clear launches in Japan

Coca-Cola Japan has launched a transparent drink called Coca-Cola Clear, which hits shelves nationwide this week.

Coca-Cola Clear is a zero calorie drink with a lemon flavor; with the recipe omitting the caramel coloring used in Coca-Cola Classic. It is available in 500ml and 280ml PET bottles, retailing at 140 yen ($1.27) and 115 yen ($1) respectively. The drink is sweetened with sucralose and acesulfame K.

Coca-Cola Japan says the launch has been timed for the summer months when novelty is required in an increasingly competitive market, with the summer carbonated beverage market around 1.5 times bigger than in winter.

Coca-Cola Clear was conceived in Japan and then developed at the company’s US headquarters in Atlanta.

Japan is known for its beverage innovation and Coca-Cola has recently launched a number of new products in this market: such as a lemon flavored alcoholic drinkCoca-Cola Plus (which contains added fiber); and Coca-Cola Frozen Lemon.
