Named Cup Noodle Potenage Big, “potenage” is a portmanteau of “potato” and “nagetsu”, referring to chicken nuggets.
The ingredients listed include “Hawaiian” fried potato (French fries), “juicy” chicken nuggets, scrambled eggs and spring onions.
According to Nissin, the inspiration behind the product was to combine of two popular “classic fast food” items with “the nostalgic taste of cup noodles”.
This new flavour in the Big 94g series will be launched across Japan.
Renowned for unusual flavours
The veteran noodle producer and innovator is renowned for launching unusual or innovative flavours.
In September 2016, to celebrate the 45th anniversary of its invention of the cup noodle, the company released a “Mystery Meat” cup noodle flavour, that left consumers guessing for some time.
Finally, the type of meat was revealed — it was a plant-based product made with soybeans.
And last November, Nissin released another East-West combo in pizza ramen.
The ramen had a tomato and cheese (and basil) broth with chunks of potato, cabbage, cheddar cheese and bacon-like bits of pork.
Momofuku Ando of Nissin is credited with having invented instant noodles in 1958, and cup noodles in 1971.
