Veolia to build two waste water treatment plants in China

Veolia Water Technologies has won a contract with Bacchus to design and build two wastewater treatment plants in Tianjin and Chengdu, China.

Bacchus manufactures RIO Alcopops, and the two factories will join its existing production facility in Shanghai to boost the company’s production capacity to meet growing domestic demand.

The plants will integrate several of Veolia’s technologies including its Biothane Advanced Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) and AnoxKaldnes Biological Activated Sludge (BAS).

Ivy Latour, marketing and communications director, Asia Industrial Water Technologies, told BeverageDaily, Bacchus is already a regional customer of Veolia China.

Rio Alcopops is really famous in China,” she said.

The customer had a big challenge to increase the capacity of its production to meet the market demand.

Bacchus in Tianjin will see a handover in May 2016 and Chengdu will handover in Q2 2017. The scope of these two projects is the same.”

Biological oxygen demand (BOD)

Due to the nature of the Food and Beverage industry, wastewater generated from processing operations contains high concentrations of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and suspended solids.

To mitigate Bacchus’s wastewater challenges, both projects feature Veolia’s anaerobic reactor, the Biothane Advanced UASB.

The technology is suitable for treatment of food and beverage-type effluents, ensuring local regulatory standards for wastewater discharge are met. In addition, it supports biogas production, which serves as an alternate energy source, maximizing renewable energy utilization for Bacchus.
