It announced earlier today that Fonterra Brands New Zealand has joined forces with TerraCycle New Zealand to launch the Fonterra Pouch Brigade scheme.
Under the programme, New Zealanders can collect yogurt pouches and send them to TerraCycle at no cost by requesting a pre-paid shipping label.
TerraCycle plans to upcycle the yogurt pouches into children's pencil cases, or recycle them into new products, such as chairs and park benches.
In a statement, Fonterra said it realized there was no way to recycle yogurt pouches in New Zealand when preparing to launch its children's yogurt, Anchor Uno, in a pouch.
Anchor Uno yogurt was launched in an on-the-go pouch in Peach & Mango, Mixed Berry and Strawberry variations.
"We know that pouches are hugely popular with kids. But we also know that Kiwis care about their environment and want to recycle their packaging waste," said Nic Bishop, environmental manager, Fonterra.
"That's why we have partnered with TerraCycle to provide a recycling solution for all yoghurt pouches - that's Anchor Uno pouches or any other yoghurt pouch," he said.
