From Pina Colada to Apple Vinegar: Top trends in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Australasia

Innova Market Insights delved into its database for Anuga Taste the Future 2013 to provide an update on the flavor trends that are driving beverage innovation in Australasia and developing Asian, African and Middle Eastern markets.

Last week, we gave you a rundown of the flavor trends, identified by Netherlands-based Innova, that have driven beverage product development in North America, and Europe in recent years.

This week, we've got - detailed in Innova's own words - the consumer trends that are fueling the development of new, innovative waters, juices, carbonated soft drinks (CSDs), beers, and spirits in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Australasia.

AFRICA

Pina Colada: Is growing in popularity in flavoured alcoholic beverages and juices.

Superfruits: Lychee can be found in juice and flavoured water and marula is appearing in spirits and liqueurs and flavoured water.

Peach: A fast-growing flavour in juices.

Tutti Frutti: A new flavour option for spirits and liqueurs.

MIDDLE EAST

Coffee Flavors: Cappuccino; latte macchiato and other latte varieties are appearing in new ice coffee launches.Watermelon: Growing in popularity in CSDs, concentrates and iced tea.

Grape Flavors: White grape and red grape flavors are growing in juices and CSDs.

Blood Orange: Can be found mainly in juices but also increasingly in CSDs.

Sour Cherry: Is an emerging flavour for juices and flavoured water.

ASIA

Tangerine: Growing fast in juices, but alsi found in more tea, CSDs and flavoured alcoholic beverages.

Pandan: Typically used in cakes and desserts, it is traversing to concentrates and juices.

Vegetable Flavors: Red tomato, artichoke, cucumber and mung bean are growing in popularity in juices, tea and some concentrates.

Apple Vinegar: Is growing in stature in the popular vinegar-based drinks space. Other more established vinegars are apple cider, black and plum.

Matcha Tea: Increasingly popular in iced tea.

Lotus: Usually found in sweet baked goods, it is also appearing in RTD teas and other soft drinks.

AUSTRALASIA

Vanilla: Increasingly appearing in tea, RTD coffee and spirits and liqueurs.

Fruit Flavors: Guava, ruby grapefruit, mango and pomegranate are new juice flavors on the scene.

Coffee: Migrating to spirits and liqueurs and even beer.

Berry Varietals: Such as strawberry and blackberry are becoming popular for flavoured alcoholic beverages, juices, tea and even cider.

Botanical Flavors: Australian flower essences and wild herbs continue to emerge in flavoured water and juice drinks.

Honey: Is a new flavour addition for RTD brown spirit products.
